The department of Arts was established in 2000, and began to enroll postgraduate students and undergraduate students respectively in 2001 and 2002. Six specialties are offered for postgraduate students, and 3 majors for undergraduate students.

The department now has 21 teachers, including 3 professors, 7 associate professors, 10 lecturers and 1 teaching assistant, of which 10 are qualified for supervising postgraduate students.

The department now is authorized to confer master’s degree on first-level discipline of art, and has attracts a group of well-known sculptors, oil painters, interior architects, landscape architects and scholars in China. The art design major is a specialized subject of XJTU with the academic background of science and engineering. It is a practical art subject that combines aesthetics, psychology, ergonomics, futurology, and science and technology. We aim to cultivate students who have professional and versatile art design talents in addition to innovative artistic design, techniques, methods and high-tech skills, and can independently engage in environmental art design, creation, teaching and research.

The Joint Design Institute was established on the basis of the agreement of XJTU – Polytechnic University of Milan Joint Innovation Center. Under the framework of the construction of the Joint Design Institute, the two parties will cooperate and jointly invest in the establishment of a joint laboratory. Applications for the construction the International Joint Design Laboratory will also be submitted to the Chinese Ministry of Education for elevating the academic level of the laboratory. In the future, the establishment of the “111 Talent Attraction Base” will also be promoted to develop a “one-to-multiple” international cooperation model based on the laboratory, attracting more world-class universities in addition to the cooperation with the Polytechnic University of Milan. Further cooperation on teaching and scientific research will also be carried out in the XJTU-Polytechnic University of Milan Joint Design Institute established in the Western China Science and Technology Innovation Harbor. Currently, a consensus has been reached with the Polytechnic University of Milan on the dual degree program of cultural heritage protection. The program is planned to be implemented in 2019 as soon as the cooperation agreement has been signed.
